During a visit our team will examine your pets oral health and recommend any necessary care, food or supplements to help ensure prolonged dental health. In some cases we may find teeth that show signs of problems, or inflamed gums. When we see these things our vet may recommend a full dental cleaning that may include extractions.
Other times the vet may note that your pets mouth looks good and just recommend a routine cleaning within a set amount of time. This is to help keep the teeth and gums healthy and try to prevent problem teeth & gums down the road that can lead to extractions.
Many mobile companies are advertising cheap "dental cleanings". These are anesthesia free dentals. Meaning, they are just getting the superficial easy to reach surfaces. They are not able to fully probe to check for problems under the gum line, which is where most problems start. In most cases they can not properly clean those hard to reach back teeth, or inside surfaces. Many will use an ultrasonic scaler which thus in itself creates micro abrasions, which is corrected in a full sedated dental cleaning by a full polishing. If left with these micro scratches it actually creates places for plaque and tarter to build up faster
